SumberAwan Temple



The 'Sumberawan' Temple only in the form of a stupa, located in the Toyomarto Village- Singosari, Residence of Malang, East Java. With a distance of about 6 km from the temple 'Singosari'. This temple is a relic of the Kingdom Singhasari and used by Buddhists at that time.

Before you reach it, visitors must first walk nearly 1 km while enjoying the scenery of rice fields planted with rice by the surrounding people.



The Sumberawan temple is made of andesite stone with a length of 6.25 m, width 6.25 m, and 5.23 m high, was built at an altitude of 650 m above sea level, in the foothills of Mount Arjuna. Scenery around the temple is very beautiful because it is located near a lake very clear water. this condition that make a nickname, to become the temple of 'rawan'.
Sumberawan temple was first discovered in 1904. Visits conducted in 1935 by researchers from the Department of Antiquities. In the days of the Dutch East Indies in 1937 was held at the foot of the temple restoration, while the rest are reconstructed in an emergency. stupa of Sumberawan temple is only found in East Java.
'Batur' in temple square construction, do not have a ladder up and not plain a relief. The temple consists of a foot and body-shaped stupa.
On the 'batur' high temple hall there, the viewer on the foot of the temple has four sides. At the foot of the temple stands a stupa consists of a square pedestal(lapik), and the pedestal(lapik) is octagonal with Padma pads, being the top of the bell-shaped (stupa) that a peak has been lost.



Archaeologists estimate Sumberawan temple formerly 'Kasurangganan', a renowned name in the book Negarakertagama. The place has been visited Hayam Wuruk in 1359 AD, when he travels around. Of written forms on the shelf(batur) and dagoba (stupa) can be estimated that the building Sumberawan temple founded around 14 to 15 century AD that the Majapahit period. Shape stupas in temple Sumberawan shows religious background that is Buddhism.
